Description
OVANTA INJ 40 MG 1S — Long Description
Product Name: ZOVANTA Injection 40 mg
Brand: Horizon Pharma
Form: Powder for Injection (single vial)
Active Ingredient: Pantoprazole Sodium 40 mg – a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces gastric acid production in the stomach by blocking the gastric proton pump responsible for acid secretion.
What It Is & How It Works
ZOVANTA 40 mg Injection is a parenteral (intravenous) formulation of pantoprazole used when rapid or controlled suppression of stomach acid is needed, especially in situations where oral medication isn’t feasible. Once administered by a healthcare professional, pantoprazole blocks the enzyme (H⁺/K⁺-ATPase) on gastric parietal cells that drives acid release, helping reduce acidity and promote healing of acid-related damage.
Primary Therapeutic Uses
This injection is used in the management of conditions caused by excessive gastric acid, such as:
-
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
-
Peptic ulcer disease (stomach and duodenal ulcers)
-
Erosive esophagitis (inflamed, acid-damaged esophagus)
-
Zollinger–Ellison syndrome (a rare over-acid condition driven by gastrin-producing tumors)
-
Prevention of stress-related ulcers and upper GI bleeding in hospitalized patients
It may also be used when oral intake is not possible or not reliable.
Administration & Dosage
ZOVANTA Injection is administered intravenously (into a vein) by a clinician or nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. The exact dose and duration are tailored to the patient’s clinical condition by a physician. It’s not a self-administered medicine.
Common Side Effects
Some reactions may occur and are generally mild, including:
-
Headache
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Diarrhea or abdominal discomfort
-
Dizziness
-
Injection site reactions (redness, pain, thrombophlebitis)
Less commonly, long-term use has been linked with mineral imbalances (like low magnesium), possible bone density changes, and nutrient absorption issues.
Precautions & Important Notes
-
Use under strict medical supervision is essential.
-
Patients with liver impairment, osteoporosis, or electrolyte imbalance may require monitoring or adjusted dosing.
-
Not typically recommended for young children; suitability in pregnancy/breastfeeding should be evaluated by a provider.
-
Avoid abrupt discontinuation after long-term use to prevent rebound acidity.
