Description
OVIRAX INF 250 mg is a prescription antiviral injection containing Acyclovir 250 mg per vial. It’s a hospital-use intravenous (IV) antiviral medicine used to treat serious herpes virus infections, including herpes simplex infections, varicella-zoster (chickenpox/shingles), herpes encephalitis, and infections in newborns and immunocompromised patients. The medicine works by inhibiting viral DNA replication, helping to halt the spread of the virus in the body.
How It Works:
Acyclovir is a synthetic nucleoside analog that targets viral DNA polymerase — an enzyme essential for viral replication — thereby blocking virus multiplication without significantly affecting normal cells.
Form & Administration:
This product is supplied as a sterile freeze-dried powder in each vial that must be reconstituted and given as a slow IV infusion by a healthcare professional, usually over about 1 hour to reduce kidney strain.
Primary Indications:
• Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections (including severe or disseminated cases)
• Herpes encephalitis (infection of the brain)
• Varicella-zoster virus infections (such as chickenpox and shingles)
• Treatment and prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients
• Infection in neonates and young infants especially up to 3 months old
Important Notes:
• Prescription-only and hospital-administered. The infusion must be given under medical supervision.
• Dose and duration depend on the type of infection, patient age, and kidney function.
• Patients are often encouraged to maintain adequate hydration during treatment to protect kidney function.
• Treatment should begin as early as possible for maximum effectiveness.
Common Side Effects:
Some possible reactions include injection-site irritation, nausea, vomiting, headache, and in rarer cases, changes in kidney function or neurological symptoms like confusion.
